Eragon by Christopher Paolini

From chapters.ca:
Fifteen-year-old Eragon believes that he is merely a poor farm boy—until his destiny as a Dragon Rider is revealed. Gifted with only an ancient sword, a loyal dragon, and sage advice from an old storyteller, Eragon is soon swept into a dangerous tapestry of magic, glory, and power. Now his choices could save—or destroy—the Empire.

The first two books of this series have attracted the imagination of a huge number of children and have become best sellers. I was somewhat leery of reading it as it was written by a very young author, but I was quite impressed by both books and am looking forward to the publication of the third.
