Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel

While I didn't enjoy this book, it is emensely popular.

From chapters.ca:
Little Shade may not be the biggest bat in his colony, but he's full of spunk and determination to keep up with the others. But there's nothing he can do when a strong wind blows him off course while migrating south for the winter. Alone and afraid, he finds himself in the middle of the ocean and winter's quickly moving in. He's not going to give up this easily, he decides, and sets out to meet up with his friends and family.
