The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey
Alan Grant is an inspector at Scotland Yard. Confined to his bed because of a broken leg, he becomes engrossed in a portrait of Richard III. If anyone knows what a criminal looks like, it's Alan, and this doesn't look like a criminal to him. Alan spends the rest of his recuperation trying to unravel the mystery of Richard III and the princes in the Tower.
