The Bagthorps by Helen Cresswell
The Bagthorps are an unusual and large family. Everyone in the family has a number of "bows in their strings", things they are good at. Rosie, for example, paints portraits. Jack, however, isn't particularly good at anything. The first book in the series, Ordinary Jack describes Jack's attempt to be special in some way and live up to the rest of his family.
The rest of the series follows the various happenings and mishaps of the Bagthorp family.
